Gear VR Comes To Samsung: Will iPhone Be Next?
This entry was posted on Thursday, October 1, 2015.
The hot talk about fans of virtual reality is definitely the new Gear VR available in November for newer Samsung phone owners. It is essentially a scaled down version of the Oculus Rift device which is expected to go on sale next year. That device will be larger, come with specialized handheld controls and connect to a PC, so its users will have more options.
But the Gear VR, priced at just $99, is the next best thing for fans of VR (and they are legion.) It doesn't offer as many options as the full-sized Oculus Rift, but it's available NOW, and it costs less than $100. Our question is, when will it become available for the Apple iPhone? If we had to guess, sooner than you might expect.
The unit, scheduled to ship in November, lets anyone with a Samsung Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge, Note 5 or S6 Edge+ handset plug in and play. It's 22 percent lighter than the previous version, according to Samsung, and includes an improved touchpad system.
It's "virtual reality for everyone" in the words of Koo – or at least everyone with a newer Samsung smartphone – and it prepares the ground for the full Oculus Rift launch coming next year (a much more capable but PC-based headset).
