Rubinstein bids farewell to HP!

The former CEO of Palm, Jon Rubinstein has bid farewell to Hewlett-Packard. The departure has come at the worst time of HP's mobile device efforts that are going on these days.

HP's statement read, "Jon has fulfilled his commitment to HP. We wish him well."

Rubinstein worked initially at Apple as an executive, who had helped in rolling out the iMac and iPod to the market. Then he became the Palm CEO and helped in launching Pre, a webOS-based smartphone. There were some speculations that the Pre will become an iPhone contender, but this never happened. The Pre never gained significant market share, let alone challenge Apple.

Then HP acquired Palm in the year 2010. webOS saw a ray of hope when HP decided to run it on the TouchPad - a tablet out to compete with Apple's iPad. Rubinstein was the HP executive at this time (Feb 2011) and he explained how the TouchPad is designed as the first generation of mobile devices that would run the webOS. He also said that the Palm Pre 3 and Veer smartphones will be released, running the webOS.

The TouchPad never took off. Only after a few weeks of its release, the weak sales let the CEO of HP, Leo Apotheker to cancel the project. Next, the idea of running webOS on smartphones was terminated. He resigned only a few weeks later and the next CEO, Meg Whitman thought that it's better to make webOS opensource, rather than sell it out.

Rubinstein stuck to defending the webOS, despite its market failure. He said in The Verge, "We built an amazing OS in webOS. It’s very advanced, it’s where things are going. But we ran out of runway, and we ended up at HP and HP wasn’t in good enough shape on its own to be able to support the effort.”

Now with his departure, HP's plans are to release the source code of the operating system under an open source license by September this year. Along with that, HP also plans to release Enyo's version 2.0. Enyo is the developer tool of webOS.
