Mount Everest Gets 3G Coverage

At a time when countries like India is yet to receive 3G coverage fully, one of the worlds remotest places would already has full 3G coverage. We’re talking about Mount Everest in Nepal – which now has been connected with a 3G network.

NCell, the Nepalese mobile service provider owned by TeliaSonera has successfully launched 3G services in the Mount Everest area. By the end of 2011, the entire country of Nepal would be covered with 3G services. Nepal had until now only 15% mobile subscriber penetration till 2008. It has now risen quickly to 30% .

As for the service near Mount Everest, it will have a base station located at 17,000 feet making it the highest mobile base station on the planet. The arrival of 3G would enable mountaineers to stop the usage of expensive satellite phones for their communication needs.
